The Bidri Packaging

2026

4 Weeks

Team Project

Unearthing the layers of Bidars fort and soil. A luxury packaging system that translates the dark earth and silver geometry into a contemporary sensorial brand experience.

INTRODUCTION Bidriware is not just a handicraft. It is a 500-year-old art form that started in the forts of Bidar, Karnataka. It uses a unique soil found only in that fort to turn zinc alloy into a deep, black metal.

THE PROJECT Maas Way is a heart-first food brand designed to bridge the emotional (and culinary) gap between home and hustle. Its a celebration of the most comforting element in every Indian home, maa ke haath ka khaana, but served with a side of sass.

We chose to work with the brand "The Bidri" for this project. This brand focuses on keeping the tradition alive but making it fit for modern homes. They do not want to sell just a souvenir. They want to sell a piece of history.

Current packaging for Bidriware is often very simple. It usually comes in cheap velvet boxes or cardboard that breaks easily. This lowers the value of the hard work the artisans put in. This project is about creating a packaging system that is as valuable as the art inside it.

WHY We noticed a big gap in the market. Bidriware is a luxury product. It takes weeks to make one small vase. The silver is hammered in by hand. Yet, when you buy it, it often arrives in a flimsy box that feels cheap. This mismatch hurts the craft. If the box looks cheap, customers think the price is too high.

OBJECTIVE We want to design packaging that protects the product and tells its story.

Specifically, we want to achieve three things:

  1. Safety: The box must hold the heavy metal securely so it does not move during shipping.

  2. Storytelling: The box must explain the "Magic Mud" story to the customer so they understand why the metal is black.

  3. Pride: The packaging should look so good that the customer keeps it on their shelf instead of throwing it in the trash.

This experience is designed to be felt in layers, much like the walls of the Bidar Fort. You will breathe in the earthy scents of the workshop and touch the different materials that make this craft possible. You will even get to feel the soil in your hands, connecting you to the very heart of the land. This journey is built right into the packaging, where the history of the fort and the story of the artist unfold to help you truly value the person behind the work.
